Budo Scholar
A new kind of leadership program for high school and college martial artists.
What this is
You already train. This is what the training is for.
You’ve learned to stay calm while someone bigger than you is trying to put you on the ground, kick you, or come at you with a training weapon. You’ve learned to make mistakes in front of people and come back the next day. Most people your age have very little practice at any of that.
And almost nobody is shown how to carry what you build on the mat into the rest of your life: the hard conversation with a friend, the presentation you have to give, the interview or the project that can’t go wrong.
This is what the Budo Scholar program is for. You keep training where you train now, with your own teacher, in whatever art your school teaches.
Never trained before?
Great! You don’t need any experience, and you don’t need to have decided on an art. We’ll help you find a school near you and get you onto the mat.
Being new to martial arts is not a disadvantage in this program. You’ll be doing it alongside students across the country who are starting where you are, supported by peers and mentors who have been there.
How it works
What a week looks like
The program runs alongside your training, one week at a time.
This Week’s Idea
Four to six minutes, to read or listen to. One idea per week.
Off the Mat
A short exercise in the app: a writing prompt, or a self-assessment. Some weeks it also asks you to try something as you go through your day.
On the Mat
A challenge you carry into that week’s martial arts training.
The Check
A short reflection or quiz. Finish it and you earn the week’s badge.
You won’t learn any of this from a screen alone. It can only happen with real training partners, in real moments on the mat that test you.
The community
Other martial artists your age, across the country
Our community runs on the Budo Discord. Ask questions, explore leadership and martial arts topics with peers and mentors, and connect with other martial artists your age from around the country.
Your martial arts school gives you a mat and a teacher. Budo Scholar gives you the people your age, in other arts and other states, working through the same leadership program you are.
Where they are now
Students in their own words
“This program gave me the confidence and the skills to speak up and share my ideas effectively. That changed how I lead, and it’s a big part of why I’ve been able to solve hard problems with our rocket team.”

How the year is built
The five phases
Foundations
The base everything that follows is built on: stance, breath, falling, and learning why we train.
Self-Mastery
Taking control of your attention and your fear, and learning to recover when failure finds you.
Perception
Reading a room, a person, a moment. Noticing what others miss.
Connection
Training with others: building trust and alliances, and learning to repair important relationships when they go wrong.
Leadership
Leading with integrity and dignity. Unlocking the power of a team, and learning to think for yourself when it matters most.
Scholarships
We choose students on merit, not on what they can pay
If you are in need of financial assistance, we offer scholarships that cover both your martial arts training and the Budo Scholar program.
Scholarship applications open in early 2027, at the same time the program opens nationally.
Full program costs will be published closer to the national opening.
For parents
Character is trained, not taught
School, on its own, doesn’t fully prepare a young person to be an adult, and it was never designed to. Discipline, resilience, and the nerve to hold your ground in a hard conversation aren’t picked up from a lecture or a reading. They’re trained, in a room, with other people, over years.
Your student will do that work in their martial arts training. Budo Scholar gives it a structure, a mentor, and a way to carry it into everything else. The curriculum was developed through our accredited program at UC Irvine, where students earn academic credit toward their degree.
If your student is under eighteen we ask for your consent before they begin, and we’ll send you the program terms and the fee and scholarship details at that point.
